FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What level are you?

  • BEGINNER: Suitable for those students who have little or no knowledge of the basic core movements. You will learn posture and be introduced to the basic moves of belly dance.
  • IMPROVER: Suitable for students who have mastered the basic moves and would like to further their development.  You will build on the technique already learned in the beginner class and move onto more challenging combinations and technique. Importance will also be placed on arm positions and transitions from one move to another.
  • INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED: These classes are more performance orientated and will include more complex choreographies.  There will be the opportunity to perform at local events but this is not compulsory. You will learn layering and more complex technique and combinations.  We will look at the different styles of belly dance and also the different rhythms used in the music to increase your knowledge of the dance and the culture.
  • The levels above are just a guidline, there are student's who have been dancing for a very short time but have excellent technique and advance very quickly - just because someone has been dancing for 10 years doesn't make them a great dancer - it's a completely individual experience for each person - come and find out.............

What should I wear?

  • You don't need to buy special belly dance wear, dressing up in sparkly things is optional, although I find that after attending classes for a while most students want to invest in a hipscarf and maybe even a belly dance skirt and top to help them feel the part.  From experience I find that once you start belly dancing it is impossible not to want to dress up in the beautiful sparkly and jingly sequined outfits - you may eventually need an extra wardrobe to keep them all in!
  • Wear something comfortable and flexible so that you can move with ease.  Most students wear jog/track pants or loose flowing skirts. No jeans please as these are very restrictive and difficult to dance in.
  • T shirt or vest top with layers over, especially in the colder months.  Layers can be removed as you get warmer.  Contrary to popular belief it is not compulsory to bare your stomach - unless of course you want to!
  • It is a good idea to bring along a shawl or scarf to tie around your hips so that when you are dancing you can feel the effect of the moves.  I always have a large variety of jingly and sparkly coin belts and tops from Egypt to purchase, just let me know if you are interested.  Most students say they 'feel the part' when they are wearing a coin belt.
  • I prefer students to dance barefoot but ballet, jazz or similar shoes are acceptable. (if unsure ask before the class)

Am I too old/too big?

  • Belly dancing is suitable for all ages. My classes include students whose ages range from 15 to late 60's.
  • Ladies of all shapes and sizes come along to classes, there is no 'right or wrong size' -  belly dance looks beautiful and graceful whatever your size or shape which is why it is such a wonderful dance form.
  • It is a great way to tone up, make lot's of new friends and have fun.

Do I need to be fit?

  • There is no specific level of fitness required for belly dancing.
  •  Each student works to their own ability and fitness level.
